Traced origins to Robert Graesser who in 1867 started to make shale oil from colliery waste in order to produce lamp oil, lubricating oil, paraffin wax, etc. Until 1873 he was in partnership with Timothy Crowther but subsequently they operated as two entirely independent businesses. From 1870s switched to manufacture of phenol and picric acid. 1920 known as Graesser Monsanto Chemical Works following acquisition of 50% interest by J F Queay of Missouri, USA. In 1920s supplying phenol and cresol for plastics manufacture. 1928 Graesser family withdrew from business when renamed Monsanto Chemical Works which from 1934 was a public company known as Monsanto Chemicals Ltd
