Established at Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, in c1835 by Manuel M Gonzalez-Angel, 1812-87, as a producer and exporter of sherry, largely to Britain and Ireland where early on it developed a network of agents - London, Bristol, Leith, Glasgow, Dublin. 1838 known as M M Gonzalez & Co. 1843 owned jointly by Gonzalez and Dubose families. 1855 Robert B Byass, formerly London agent, of Byass & Barclay of London, joined as partner and by 1863 owned half of business when renamed Gonzalez & Byass. Business remained in the hands of the Gonzalez and Byass families until the 1980s. Later called Gonzales Byass & Co. Byass family withdrew in 1988.
