Sir James Goldsmith, 1933-97, deal maker with business interests in Britain and France. In the latter his chief vehicle was Generale Occidentale. In Britain much of his deal making was done through Cavenham Foods Ltd, a public business which he established in 1965 to own food retailing businesses he had recently acquired. 1959-62 involved with Jelim Zilkhe in establishment of Mothercare Ltd. Subsequently acquired Bovril Co Ltd in 1971 and Allied Suppliers Ltd in 1972. Cavenham acquired by Generale Occidentale in 1977. Also involved with Slater Walker Securities of which he was sometime chairman
