Traced origins to (Sir) John Gladstone, 1764-1851, who in late 18th century was in partnership at Liverpool with William Corrie and Jackson Bradshaw in Corrie Gladstone & Bradshaw. With a brother, established his own house in 1801 in which he subsequently involved several other brothers. Early on specialised in US grain and tobacco and from 1803 in West Indies sugar. Acquired extensive sugar plantations in West Indies and later in Bengal. Emerged as a leading Liverpool merchant. Latterly also involved in UK railway promotion and speculation. His son, William, became prime minister
