Notes:
Traced origins to Robert Gillow, c1703-72, who in c1728 established a furniture making business in Lancaster. Joined in partnership by his son, Richard, 1733-1811, in 1757, when became Robert Gillow & Son. Under Richard, and from 1769 his brother Robert, the firm grew substantially in size and stature with the family opening a London business in 1769 and developing from a significant provincial firm to a leading national one. From 1740s exported furniture to West Indies [later also the Baltic] and imported rum and sugar. The Gillow family sold the business in 1813 but it continued as Gillow & Co. 1903 merged with Waring & Co of Liverpool to become Waring & Gillow Ltd, leading furniture retailers and manufacturers. Gave up furniture making c1962. Later merged with Maple & Co Ltd to form Maple, Waring & Gillow Ltd which later formed Allied Maple Ltd
