Notes:

Traced origins to Canal Iron Works, Kendal, founded in 1853 by Williamson Brothers for production of agricultural machinery. Soon diversified into manufacture of water turbines which were built according to vortex design. 1881 acquired by Gilbert Gilkes of Middlesbrough who established a limited company for purpose. Diversified into other types of turbine, governors and pumps. Subsequently acquired James Gordon & Co Ltd of London in 1928 and, later, Carrick & Ritchie Ltd of Edinburgh and Gunther & Sons Ltd of Oldham. Continues
