Carlo Gatti, 1817-78, arrived in England in 1847 and soon established a chain of continental-style cafes in central London. By 1849 had a chocolate factory and in 1850s became first UK mass producer of ice cream. 1857 established an ice importing business and subsequently opened a chain of music halls under Variety Theatres Consolidated. Carlo's brothers and nephews also established cafes and entertainment businesses in London, in particular owning theatres. Developed electricity supply interests in order to supply their own business needs and these expanded into Charing Cross & Strand Electricity Supply Co Ltd. In 20th century all these interests were gradually disposed of although some were retained until late century, especially United Carlo Gatti Stevenson Slater Ltd, the ice cream business, until 1981
