Traces origins to 1661 when established as ironmongers at Exeter by John Atken. Subsequently other owners. By 1780s, under Samuel Kingdon, also operated as founders, making in particular grates. In 1849 acquired by Garton & Jarvis and in 1865 known as Garton & King. Developed as an important local foundry making, inter alia, stoves, grates, railings, radiators, etc. Incorporated 1924. 1933 gave up ironmongery shop and developed especially as installers, maintainers and distributors of Aga and Rayburn appliances. 1943 acquired Taylor & Bodley Ltd. Foundry closed 1979 and distribution business continues as Garton King Appliances Ltd
