Traced origins to Richard Garrett, 1757-1838, who set up in business as an agricultural hand tool maker in 1778, making in particular sickles. Early 19th century started to make threshing machines when known as Richard Garrett & Son. From mid 19th century emerged as a leading manufacturer of agricultural machinery, especially steam threshing machines, drills, hoes, ploughs, steam tractors, etc, and later steam rollers, trolley buses, etc. Incorporated 1897. 1919 merged into Agricultural & General Engineers Ltd and, on its failure, acquired by Beyer Peacock & Co Ltd. Subsequently other owners. Closed early 1980s
