Traced origins to c1702 when Joseph Farmer, d1741, established himself as a steel wares manufacturer and early on started gunmaking in which he became a leader. Galtons married into Farmer family in 1746 and joined business. By 1760s Galton family more important in its affairs than the Farmer family. 1804 Samuel Galton, Joseph Gibbins and S T Galton established a bank which closed 1831. Supplied firearms especially to merchants in West Africa to facilitate their purchase of slaves. Stopped gunmaking c1815
