Traced origins to William Foster, d1876, grain miller, who in 1856 converted his business to engineering. Made threshing machines, other agricultural machinery, portable steam engines and grain milling machinery. In particular played a pioneering role in tank manufacture, 1914-18. Developed a substantial pump making business through acquisition of Gwynnes Pumps Ltd of Hammersmith, London, in 1927 when production moved to Lincoln. 1960 acquired by W H Allen & Co Ltd and continued until late 1960s as Allen Gwynnes Pumps Ltd
