Traces origins to 1873 when established at Preston by James Askew, d1928, as a bookseller and occasionally as a publisher. He had formerly been a 'book canvasser'. In 1890s started to specialise in supply of bibles and book prizes to Sunday schools. Incorporated 1936. Broadened business to supply of books and services to wide range of libraries and institutions, eg British Council in 1985. Continues as Askew Library Services
