Traced origins to Robert Fleming, 1845-1933, who in 1873 was a jute fabric manufacturer at Dundee. Subsequently established investment trusts to invest funds accumulated by Scottish industrialists, in particular in US securities, notably railroad company bonds. 1873 participated in formation of Scottish American Investment Trust Ltd, the first Scottish based investment trust.. Moved head office to London in 1909 where largest investment trust managers by 1933. After 1945 emerged as a rounded investment bank with important interests in investment management and corporate finance. 1970 established Jardine Fleming, based at Hong Kong, as a merchant banking joint venture. 2000 acquired by Chase Manhattan Bank when Fleming family established the investment house of Fleming Family & Partners [2023]
