Traced origins to 1893 when incorporated as Fishguard Bay Railway & Pier Co Ltd, owned by Great Western Railway and Ireland based Great Southern & Western Railway Co. Set about building new harbours/piers at Fishguard and Rosslare and subsequently acquired three ferries to link the two. Opened 1906. 1948 British Transport Commission acquired Great Western Railway's interest which in 1963 passed to British Railways Board. From 1979 interest held by Sealink UK Ltd which in 1984 was privatised on sale to Sea Containers Ltd.
