Traced origins to James Finlay who established himself as a merchant at Glasgow in 1750, in particular dealing in cotton goods. His son acquired extensive cotton manufacturing assets. 1860s established branches at Bombay and Liverpool. Latter part of 19th century, under Sir John Muir, developed several other Indian branches and established wide ranging industrial, commercial and agency house interests in India. Post 1945 Scottish textile interests ended and overseas interests refocused on other industries in other countries, especially tea plantations in Sri Lanka and East Africa. 2000 acquired by Swire Pacific
