Traced origins to 1866 when established by Samuel Fielding and James Platt as a general engineering business. From 1870s a specialisation was hydraulic engineering (cranes, lifts, presses, coal tips, steam hammers, etc) although great success came from invention and sale of rivetting machines. From 1880s also made steam, oil and diesel engines and supplied general castings from its foundry. Continues as a manufacturer of presses especially for concrete products
