Notes:
Established c1832 to serve slate mines, the promoter being Henry Archer and the engineer and manager being James Spooner, 1790-1856. Built 1833-36. Narrow gauge. c14 miles long. Linked the quarries to the port at Porthmadog. Initially operated by gravity/horses. Converted to steam 1860s and also carried passengers from 1865. 1921 controlling interest taken by Aluminium Corp of Dolgarrog. 1946 virtually closed. 1954 acquired by enthusiasts and developed as a leisure attraction [2023]
