Traced origins to William Ewart, 1759-1851, who in c1790s became involved in cotton manufacture. 1814 established a partnership with his son as William Ewart & Son. 1840s diversified into flax spinning. 1852 acquired Glenbank Bleaching Works. Under (Sir) William Ewart, 1817-89, became Northern Ireland's largest linen manufacturer. 1880s bought up several competitor businesses, eg Bedford Street Weaving Co. Incorporated 1883. Post 1945 in decline. 1950s employing 4,000. 1973 merged with William Liddell & Co Ltd, established 1866, to form Ewart Liddell. 2001 acquired by Baird McNutt
