Traces origins to Associated Dairies & Farm Stores Ltd of Leeds, a dairying and food retailing business established in 1949, and to the butchery and, later, supermarket interests of the Asquith family of Yorkshire, which dated to the 1920s. 1965 they combined these interests into a joint venture, Asda Ltd, and soon started opening supermarkets outside Yorkshire, initially in the North East. Associated soon bought out the Asquith family's interests so that Asda became fully owned by Associated. Diversified briefly and unsuccessfully into other retail areas from late 1970s, eg Allied Carpets and Wades Furniture. Early 1980s business was reconstructed when Associated Dairies Plc and Asda Ltd merged with MFI to form Asda MFI Plc but unsuccessful and soon demerged as Asda Group Plc. 1999 acquired by Walmart of USA and continues as a leading UK supermarket group in 2018
