Traced origins to a pewtering business established by Thomas Scatterwood in 1703. This subsequently traded under several names with those of the Townsend and Compton families being the most prominent early on. Mid 19th century Henry Compton & Co was acquired by Elmslie & Simpson, leading tin foil manufacturers of Leather Lane, but was run separately until 1868 when known as Elmslie & Simpson. Early 1880s tin foil business closed and reorganised in 1885 as Brown & Englefield. 1935 renamed Englefields and in 1945 incorporated as Englefields (London) Ltd. Made wide range of consumer products such as tankards, flagons, goblets, castors, alter furniture, christmas bells, etc. c1960s acquired by Cookson Group. Still working late 1980s when oldest cast pewter business in world
