Traced origins to Edmund J Arnold, bc1840, who established himself in 1863 as a printer, stationer and bookseller at Barnstaple. 1870 moved to Leeds where diversified into supplying stationery and other requisites to schools. This latter activity grew to dominated the business within 10 years. By 1895 contracted with many local authorities nationwide to supply stationery, textbooks, equipment, furniture, etc. Printing works turned out exercise books, etc. 1892 known as E J Arnold & Son. Incorporated 1898. By 1960s branches in London, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast when still owned by Arnold family
