Established 1883 through the merger of the incandescent electric lamp making businesses of (Sir) Joseph Swan and Thomas Edison of USA to form The Edison & Swan United Electric Light Co Ltd of Newcastle, later London. First factory was at Benwell, Newcastle, followed in 1886 by modern works at Ponders End, Greater London. 1916 renamed The Edison Swan Electric Co Ltd. Subsequently acquired by British Thomson Houston Co Ltd [BTH] which shortly afterwards, in 1928, merged with several other businesses, to form Associated Electrical Industries Ltd [AEI Ltd]. Through BTH acquired Mazda brand, sometime belonging to General Electric Co of USA. Continued to trade separately until 1957 when merged with Siemens Brothers & Co Ltd to form Siemens Edison Swan Electric Co Ltd within AEI Group. Sometime merged with lighting interests of Thorn Electric in a joint venture known as Thorn AEI Radio Valves & Tubes Ltd which also held Thorn's Brimar brand
