Traced origins to W G Armstrong & Co of Elswick, established by (Sir) William Armstrong, later Lord Armstrong, 1810-1900, in 1847 to make hydraulic equipment, cranes and notably artillery pieces for the British army at the time of the Crimean War. 1882 merged with Charles Mitchell & Co, shipbuilders at Newcastle to form Sir W G Amrstrong Mitchell & Co Ltd. 1897 merged with Sir Joseph Whitworth & Co Ltd to form Sir W G Armstrong Whitworth & Co Ltd. Now a leading munitions, shipbuilding, iron and steel, locomotives and other transport equipment business. Made motor cars from 1902 and aircraft from 1913. In difficulties in 1920s when business dismembered. Shipbuilding interests acquired by Vickers to form Vickers Armstrong, 1927. Motor vehicles and aircraft interests acquired by J D Siddeley
