As cotton spinners traced origins to (Sir) Richard Arkwright, 1732-92, who was initially in business at Bolton and who moved to Nottingham in 1768. There he, with others, perfected cotton spinning machinery, and as Richard Arkwight & Co, established a major cotton spinning business based at Cromford and several other mill sites such as Belper, Bakewell, Wirksworth, Alport, Rocester. His longest-standing partners, until 1782, were Jedediah Strutt and Samuel Need, the former in 1782 taking sole ownership of factories at Belper and Milford. Certain of his mills inherited by his son, Richard, 1755-1843
