Also built food processing interests which were sold in 1987. Grew rapidly by acquisition of food retailing, wholesaling and processing businesses which included Oriel Foods in 1981 and Allied Suppliers Group Ltd in 1982. 1986 launch an unsuccessful hostile bid for Distillers Co Ltd. Food processing interests sold 1987. Acquired Safeway Stores in UK in 1987 and in 1996 renamed Safeway Plc. 2003 was acquired by Wm Morrison Supermarkets Plc
