Traced origins to Joseph Martin and G W Dray who, in 1856, established a rag merchant's business. 1858 acquired Charles Ritchie & Co, wholesale and manufacturing stationers in City of London. Subsequently established Drayton Paper Works which produced, inter alia, toilet paper. From 1883 known as G W Drayton & Son and incorporated c1890. 1886 opened new works at Southwark where operated as stationery wholesalers and manufacturers, bookbinders and printers. Specialised in particular in papers - wrapping, toilet, writing, etc. 1901 opened separate printing works. 1910 reorganised when stationery operation placed in Drayton Paper Works Ltd. 1914 transferred works to Fulham, 1925 moved printing to Ilford and 1927 acquired papermill at Romsey. Subsequently made other acquisitions such as Strong Hanbury & Co Ltd, paper merchants, in 1929 and Hadlow & Sons Ltd of Brighton in 1955
