Traces origins to 1840 as shipbuilders when established by William Doxford, d1882. Established engine and boiler building in 1878. Incorporated 1891 as William Droxford & Sons Ltd. By 1906 undertaking pioneering research into new types of marine engines of which it was to become a leading manufacturer in the 1920s. 1918 acquired from Doxford family by Northumberland Shipbuilding Co Ltd, the latter a vehicle of the Sperling Combine. After collapse of Northumberland Shipbuilders reacquired by Doxford family. Emerged as Sunderland's biggest shipbuilder. 1961 merged with Sunderland Shipbuilding, Dry Docks & Engineering Co Ltd to form Doxford & Sunderland Shipbuilding & Engineering Co Ltd. Known as Doxford & Sunderland Shipbuilders Ltd in 1970 and as Sunderland Shipbuilders Ltd in 1973 following acquisition by Court Line Ltd. Subsequently nationalised as part of British Shipbuilders in 1977
