Traced origins to the Don family in the late 18th century and in particular to Gilbert Don, 1741-90, and his son, William, d1817, inter alia linen and flax merchants at Forfar, dealing especially in osnaburgs, a course linen cloth. Started linen cloth production c1810. Early on known as Don & Co and sometime after 1817 as, inter alia, Robert Don & Co and then Robert Don & Son. 1840s Dundee branch established. From 1865 established major mill at Fofar. Also 1865 established Don Brothers Buist & Co through merger with A J Buist of Dundee. From late 1860s constructed large mill at Dundee. 1870s diversified into manufacture of jute cloth. Incorporated 1904 as Don Brothers Buist & Co Ltd when focused increasingly on jute products. 1960 merged with Low Brothers & Co (Dundee) Ltd, family owned textile merchants, established in 1913 by William and Peter Low. Diversified from 1960s, especially into polypropylene based textile products. Floated 1982 as Don Bros Buist Plc. 1986 acquired by Shell UK Ltd. Continues as a subsidiary, from 1999, of Trace Plastics Group of Greece
