Notes:

Established in 1891 as Dodwell, Carlill & Co by George Dodwell, 1851-1925, and A J H Carlill out of the failing Shanghai merchant house business of Adamson Bell & Co. The latter traced its origins to W R Adamson & Co in 1850s which exported from Treaty Ports on China Coast goods such as silk and tea and imported manufactures. Early on also acted as shipping agents for, inter alia, Canadian Pacific Steamship Co. Also developed a substantial London base which was incorporated there in c1898 as Dodwell & Co Ltd. Emerged as a major agency business with branches throughout China and Japan and by 1900 developed large shipowning/managing interests in Far East such as North Pacific Steamship Co. Developed other branches in Sri Lanka, USA, Canada, Africa, etc. 1972 acquired by Inchcape & Co Ltd
