Traced origins to early 1840s. In 1845 incorporated largely by Morris family (including the father of William Morris, the designer of Morris Marshall Faulkner & Co) to own and develop recently worked copper mines near Tiverton on land leased from Duke of Bedford. Initially met with great success and became Devon's leading copper mine. After 1866 profitability substantially declined. William Morris a director 1871-75, selling out in 1877. Diversified into arsenic extraction and production from c1870s and in this became a world leader. 1872 incorporated as Devon Great Consols Co Ltd, a public company, and reconstructed in 1899 as Devon Great Consols Ltd. Subsequently in difficulties and closed c1901. The mine subsequently reopened for arsenic production 1915-30
