Traced origins to 1895 when John Dennis, 1871-1939, started to manufacture and sell bicycles at Guildford. Soon joined by his brother (Sir) Raymond, 1878-1939. Also made motor tricycles from 1898 and motor cars between 1901 and 1913. From 1904 made commercial vehicles and came to specialise in buses, fire engines and refuse vehicles. Incorporated 1901 as Dennis Bros Ltd. Early 1970s acquired by Hestair Ltd to become Hestair Dennis Ltd and in 1984 acquired by management via Trinity Holdings Ltd when known as Dennis Specialist Vehicles, makers of buses and municipal vehicles. In c1995 acquired by Mayflower Corp Plc, owners of Alexander bus building operation at Falkirk, and subsequently subsumed into TransBus International. 2004, when Mayflower in administration, acquired by newly formed Alexander Dennis business which in 2024 continues [2024]
