Traced origins to Thomas de la Rue, 1793-1866, who was publishing a newspaper in Guernsey by 1813. Around 1816 relocated to London and by 1830 was making playing cards in a business that came to be known briefly as De la Rue, James & Rudd. Emerged as a leading speciality printer, especially of playing cards but also of railway tickets, visiting cards, etc, by mid 19th century when under Warren and William de la Rue. Came to manufacture stationery, notably envelopes. Soon after developed as a leading security printer, notably of postage stamps, banknotes, security certificates, etc. Did large international business from an early date. 1896 incorporated as Thomas De La Rue & Co Ltd. 1921 public company. Made fountain pens, 1880-1958. Diversified into electronics especially cash handling systems. 1994 acquired Portals Ltd, banknote paper manufacturers. Continues in 2012 as De La Rue Plc when largest banknote printer and papermaker in the world
