(Sir) William de la Pole, d1366, was the leading merchant and financier at Hull from at least 1317, sometimes working in partnership with his brother, Sir Richard, d1345, until 1331. Leading citizens of Hull. Early on, dealt especially in Gascon wine and, later on, on a much bigger scale, in wool. From 1327 financier, inter alia, of the King on a massive scale, largely through borrowing from other merchants, the proceeds of which went to finance military campaigns. Leading participant in the creation of the unsuccessful Wool Company as a vehicle to finance the King's war with France in the late 1330s. Accumulated great landed estates in Yorkshire and Durham
