Traced origins to David Davis, 1797-1866, who established a coal mining business in South Wales from c1830s, especially at Ferndale which was developed from 1857 and where two major disasters occurred in 1867 and 1869. Business known as D Davis & Sons in 1866 when joined by his sons David and Lewis, 1829-88, who, inter alia, promoted the construction of Barry Dock and its railway. Incorporated as D Davis & Sons Ltd in 1890. 1894 acquired local assets of A Taylor & Co Ltd. 1916 acquired by Cambrian Trust Ltd. 1927 part of Welsh Associated Collieries Ltd and in 1935 part of Powell Duffryn Associated Collieries Ltd [2023]
