As David Davies & Co he developed coal mines in the Rhonda Valley, especially at Parc and Maendy. Incorporated 1887 as Ocean Coal Co Ltd and in 1907 amalgamated with Wilsons Ltd, inter alia coal agents, to form Ocean Coal & Wilsons Ltd and, very much later, Ocean Wilsons (Holdings) Ltd. Davies other interests included railway contracting and port and road building. He developed Barry Docks and was connected with, inter alia, Vale of Clwyd Railway, Oswestry & Newton Railway, Pembroke & Tenby Railway and Manchester & Milford Railway
