Traced origins to late 18th century when Charles Davidson and Charles Smith started papermaking at Stoneywood near Mugiemoss. Separated 1796 when Davidson made paper and snuff at Mugiemoss. In 1850s focusing on paper bags and felt papers [for carpet underlay]; by 1875 largest producer of paper bags world wide. 1857 opened London warehouse followed by others elsewhere. Incorporated 1875. In early 20th century turned to quality papers. 1930s started to make millboard and waterproof papers and subsequently paper containers. 1953 acquired by British Plasterboard Industries Ltd (BPB). 1965, with Radcliffe Paper Mill Co Ltd, formed Davidson Radcliffe Group within BPB
