Incorporated by royal charter 1853 to acquire and rebuild at Sydenham, and subsequently manage, the greater part of the 1851 Great Exhibition building. Especially in 1870s involved in the development of part of its estate for middle class housing. Company reconstructed 1898. Wound up from 1909. From 1920 building publicly owned. Destroyed by fire 1936
