Notes:

Traced origins to 1867 when established by Francis, 1839-97, and (Sir) William Crossley, 1844-1911. Acquired the pump and small steam engine business of John Dunlop of Manchester when known as Crossley Brothers & Dunlop. 1881 incorporated as Crossley Brothers Ltd. 1869 acquired rights to atmospheric internal combustion engine and in 1890s rights to oil engines and diesel systems rights were acquired. 1882 moved to new works at Openshaw. By 1901 making petrol engines for motor vehicles. Early 1900s started motor vehicle production, establishing Crossley Motors Ltd. In 1914 their production was shifted to the new Errwood Park Works at Stockport. Built aircraft during 1914-18. 1920-28 held a substantial interest in A V Roe & Co Ltd, aircraft builders. 1919 acquired Premier Gas Engines Ltd of Sandiacre and in 1935 known as Crossley Premier Engines Ltd. Crossley Brothers in receivership 1966 when certain assets sold on and name continued
