Traced origins to James Cropper, 1773-1840, and Thomas Benson (supported by his uncle Robert) who established Cropper Benson in 1799. Son joined by Robert R Benson, 1785-1846. Developed into leading Liverpool merchants and shipowners dealing with, inter alia, Ireland, North America and Far East. Participated in the formation and were agents of the American Blackball Line, 1817. Connected with Liverpool & Manchester Railway Co. Also very active in anti slavery movement. Close to Rathbone Brothers. Partnership dissolved 1838 when business carried on as, inter alia, Robert Benson & Co which in 1947 merged to form Robert Benson Lonsdale, later part of Kleinwort Benson [2023]
