Samuel Crompton, 1753-1827, invented in late 1770s spinning mule for cotton yarn production, an invention of huge importance that ushered in the modern cotton industry in the late 18th century. His invention was never patented and he gained little financial reward through it despite petitions to the cotton industry and to Parliament for remuneration. Alongside his inventive activity he conducted business on a small scale as a cotton textile producer/finisher at Bolton, 1791-1815, and as owner of a bleaching works at Darwen, 1813-22. He never manufactured his invention for sale
