Traced origins to a long established linen business based at Lochee, near Dundee, and owed by the Cox family for several generations. In c1840 four Cox brothers, led by James, 1809-85, established Cox Brothers to continue the business. In 1850s moved from linen to jute and by 1880s had emerged as largest jute business in the world with a vertically integrated structure. From late 1840s built the very large Camperdown Jute Works which came to employ 5,000. Came to make, inter alia, tarpaulins, bags, cords, mattings, rugs, bedcovers, tablecloths, school bags, etc. Incorporated 1893. 1920 merged into Jute Industries Ltd, organised by Clarence Hatry, in which it was the largest component. Jute Industries was later renamed Sidlaw Industries Ltd
