Traced origins to a long established grocery business of the Gates family at Guildford. In late 19th century established a dairy business, supplying in particular cream to London market and known as West Surrey Central Dairy. Supplied through their dairies in West Country. In c1904 started to manufacture dried milk for babies under Cow & Gate brand. Expanded rapidly and converted to a public company in 1918. Grew through acquisitions in 1920s and 30s. Renamed Cow & Gate Ltd. 1959 merged with United Dairies Ltd to form Unigate Ltd. Continues as brand owned by Groupe Danone
