A Huguenot family that arrived in London in the late 17th century. Traced origins as gold and silversmiths to Augustin Courtauld, c1685-1751, who emerged as a leading London silversmith from c1708 when he set up in business. His brother, Peter, c1690-1729, was also at work from early 18th century. Augustin was succeeded in business by his son, Samuel, 1720-65, while another son, George, with his son, Samuel, became a silk throwster whose business was to emerge many years later as Courtaulds Ltd. The goldsmith business in due course passed to Samuel's widow, Louisa, d1807, and then to her son, Samuel, 1752-1821, who gave it up in 1780 in favour of John Henderson
