Established 1849 at Belfast by David Anderson to make tarred flax, especially for roofing, sold under 'Red Hand' label. 1879 incorporated as D Anderson & Son Ltd. c1904 started manufacturing in London. 1904 merged with Siderosthen Paint Syndicate Ltd and in 1920s/30s moved head office and chief manufacturing plant to Manchester. Public company in 1930s. Especially made felt for roofing, damp proof coursing and marine purposes. 1930s converted to a public company. 1930s started making plaster board and subsequently acquired by British Plaster Board Ltd in 1939
