Traced origins to Edward Cook, d1831, soapmaker at Norwich. 1820 acquired London soapworks of Mr Darby at Bankside, Southwark. About this time known as Brickwood & Cook of London and Norwich. 1826 known as Edward Cook & Son, as John & Edward Cook from 1831 and later as Edward Cook & Co. 1845 business divided between brothers with Edward taking soap business and John the tallow business. Soapmaking relocated to Bow 1859. 1860s Primrose brand developed and later well known as antiseptic soaps. Also made 'manures' from crushed animal bones, etc, and also dripping. From late 19th century acquired numerous London competitors. 1898 incorporated. 1911 acquired by Lever Brothers Ltd
