Traced origins to 1849 when established by John Friend, d1864, and John Piddington as Friend & Co of Dover to provide a daily parcel service between UK and Continent via the Dover Ostend Line (35 years ahead of the establishment of a GPO service). Traded as Continental Daily Parcels Express. Established conventions with Continental post offices to facilitate delivery as well as a network of Continental agents. c1920 incorporated as Continental Daily Parcels Express Ltd, later shortened to Continental Express Ltd. 1923 acquired by Proprietors of Hays Wharf Ltd
