Established 1968 by (Sir) Alan Sugar, b1947, to trade in electrical goods, latterly especially home computers, later satellite dishes. 1970 started to manufacture parts for electrical goods. 1980 converted to public company. From 1980s launched innovative electronic products, designed by Amstrad, aimed at mass market at competitive price, eg home computer, word processor, email, etc, products. 1986 purchased personal computer interests of Sir Clive Sinclair held in Sinclair Research Ltd. 1997 reconstructed. 2007 acquired by BSkyB Plc
