Traced origins to Derwent Iron Co, established in 1840 by Jonathan Richardson to develop an iron works at Consett and operate nearby coal and iron ore mines. Unprofitable and supported by its bank, Northumberland & Durham District Bank. Collapsed 1857 following the failure of the bank and reorganised as Derwent & Consett Iron Co in 1858. Reconstructed in 1864 as Consett Iron Co Ltd. From now very profitable. 1866 acquired Richardson & Co's tinplate works at Consett. By 1875 reckoned the 'largest iron plate works in the world'. Operated own collieries including Langley Park Colliery, opened 1873 and nationalised 1947. In late 19th century (Sir) David Dale was important in its affairs as MD and later chairman. Nationalised 1951, denationalised as Consett Iron Co Ltd and in 1967 renationalised and incorporated into British Steel Corp
