Traced origins to Abbey Road & St John's Wood Building Society, established in 1874, and to the National Building Society, established 1849, which merged in 1944 to form Abbey National Building Society. The National was established to facilitate acquisition of property by voters seeking enfranchisement under 1832 Reform Act; it developed as a conventional building society and grew rapidly after 1918 but did not open branches. Sir Harold Bellman was secretary, 1921-48. 1989, when an industry leader, demutualised as Abbey National Plc to become one of UK's largest banks. Acquired in 2004 by Santander Bank of Spain
