Established 1837 by Henry, b1774, and Thomas Houldsworth as an iron production business based on Coltness Iron Works and coal and ironstone extraction business; they already had substantial interests at Glasgow in cotton spinning and engineering and iron founding [Anderston Foundry]. 1846 opened a second plant, Dalmellington Iron Works and later brickworks, and cement making plant in 1909. Incorporated 1881. 1902 acquired Warwickshire Coal Co Ltd. By 1920s focused on coal mining, acquiring other companies including ones in England, eg Rotherham pits of Steward & Lloyds Ltd in 1934 and Cumberland Coal Co (Whitehaven) Ltd in 1937. 1920s closed iron making plant and began major diversification into cement and brickmaking. 1920s acquired James Waldy & Co Ltd, Edinburgh and Glasgow coal merchants. 1947, when one of largest UK mining businesses working 15 collieries in Scotland and England, nationalised as part of National Coal Board
